Our ECO Certification and Sustainability Commitment

Our Story

Wilderness Escape Outdoor Adventures has been helping young people experience the outdoors for 35 years.

Founded in South Australia in 1991, we deliver outdoor education camps, school programs, day excursions and adventure experiences that help students build confidence, resilience, teamwork and practical outdoor skills.

Our programs support schools with safe, engaging and curriculum-aligned outdoor learning. From kayaking, rock climbing and bushwalking to team challenges, environmental learning and camp-based activities, we create experiences that encourage students to step outside their comfort zone, connect with nature and learn by doing.

We work with primary and secondary schools across South Australia and beyond, tailoring programs to suit different year levels, learning outcomes, abilities and group needs.

Our experienced team provides the planning, equipment, safety systems and facilitation needed to make outdoor learning accessible, meaningful and well managed. As we celebrate 35 years in 2026, our focus remains the same: creating safe, memorable and purposeful outdoor experiences that support young people, schools and communities.

Our programs take children and young people into some of South Australia’s most unique outdoor settings, including beaches, waterways, bushland, conservation areas, trails and campsites.

These places are central to what we do. They are also living environments that need respect, care and protection.

Our sustainability commitment is practical. We aim to reduce our impact, educate participants, support local communities and help young people build a stronger connection with nature.

We also recognise that sustainability is broader than the environment. It includes safe operations, inclusive participation, responsible marketing, strong community relationships and respect for the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters where we educate, learn and adventure.

Successful initiatives across our business include ongoing equipment maintenance to extend product life, reuse of program resources where safe and practical, environmental education embedded into outdoor learning, site-specific planning, waste-conscious program delivery and continued review of our systems through our Environmental Management Plan and risk management processes.

We also work with land managers, schools, community groups and industry partners to ensure our activities are suitable for the places we visit. This helps protect access to outdoor locations and supports long-term care for the environments that make our programs possible.

Across our programs we work to:

  • Follow Leave No Trace principles
  • Minimise waste and reduce unnecessary resource use
  • Reuse, repair and maintain equipment where practical
  • Support local communities, suppliers and regional areas
  • Respect wildlife, waterways, vegetation and cultural sites
  • Follow site-specific requirements set by land managers
  • Use outdoor experiences to build environmental awareness
  • Review and improve our practices over time

Our staff play an important role in this work. Through safety briefings, activity delivery and group management, they help participants understand how to move through natural places with care.

This may include staying on tracks, taking rubbish out, protecting waterways, avoiding disturbance to wildlife, respecting cultural values and understanding why small actions matter.

Environmental awareness is part of how we deliver outdoor education.

Our staff use each program as an opportunity to help participants notice, understand and respect the natural places they visit.

This may include discussion about local ecosystems, wildlife, waterways, coastal environments, bushland, cultural values, weather, responsible behaviour and the impact people can have on natural areas.

We incorporate environmental awareness through:

  • Pre-program information and expectations
  • Safety and site briefings
  • Leave No Trace principles
  • Activity-based learning
  • Respectful movement through natural areas
  • Waste-conscious program delivery
  • Site-specific rules and land manager requirements
  • Group reflection and discussion where appropriate

Our goal is to help young people enjoy outdoor experiences while understanding their role in protecting the places they visit.

Wilderness Escape Outdoor Adventures follows Leave No Trace principles across our outdoor education programs and nature-based activities.

These principles help our staff and participants reduce their impact and move through outdoor places with care.

The seven Leave No Trace principles are:

  • Plan ahead and prepare
  • Travel and camp on durable surfaces
  • Dispose of waste properly
  • Leave what you find
  • Minimise campfire impacts
  • Respect wildlife
  • Be considerate of others

In practice, this means we encourage participants to stay on designated tracks, take rubbish with them, avoid disturbing wildlife, protect waterways, respect cultural and natural sites, follow staff instructions and leave outdoor places as they found them. Our staff reinforce these principles through briefings, activity delivery, group management and environmental learning during programs.

Wilderness Escape Outdoor Adventures is committed to responsible, safe and sustainable outdoor education.

Our sustainability priorities guide how we plan, deliver and review our programs. They support our commitment to reducing impact, protecting natural areas, supporting communities and providing safe, inclusive experiences for participants.

Our sustainability priorities are:

  • Protect the natural environments where we operate
  • Follow Leave No Trace principles
  • Reduce waste and unnecessary resource use
  • Maintain, repair and reuse equipment where safe and practical
  • Support local communities, suppliers and regional areas
  • Respect Traditional Custodians, cultural values and heritage sites
  • Follow land manager requirements and site-specific conditions
  • Build environmental awareness into program delivery
  • Provide safe, inclusive and accessible outdoor experiences where practical
  • Use responsible and accurate marketing
  • Review and improve our practices through our Environmental Management Plan, risk management systems and operational procedures

These priorities are supported by our internal policies and procedures, including our Environmental Management Plan, safety and risk management procedures, staff training, site planning, activity procedures, incident reporting and ongoing business review.

We recognise that sustainability is an ongoing commitment. We will continue to review our systems, improve our practices and work with schools, families, staff, land managers and partners to protect the places that make outdoor education possible.

Wilderness Escape Outdoor Adventures is proud to be recognised through Ecotourism Australia’s ECO Certification program at the Nature Tourism level.

This certification recognises our commitment to responsible outdoor education, nature-based experiences and sustainable business practices.

It also gives our schools, families, partners and participants confidence that our programs are delivered with care for people, places and the natural environments we use.

ECO Certification gives us a clear framework to keep improving. It helps us measure what we do, identify gaps and strengthen our commitment to responsible nature-based experiences.

We want every participant to leave with more than a memory. We want them to leave with greater confidence, stronger connections and a deeper respect for the natural world.

Wilderness Escape Outdoor Adventures aims to provide safe, inclusive and enjoyable outdoor experiences for children, young people, schools and families.

We recognise that accessibility is not one size fits all. Participants may have different physical, sensory, cognitive, medical, behavioural, cultural, social or emotional needs.

We encourage parents, caregivers, schools and support workers to contact us before booking so we can discuss individual requirements and determine what reasonable adjustments may be possible.

Our programs take place in outdoor environments, including bushland, beaches, waterways, trails, campsites and adventure activity sites.

This means some activities and locations may have natural access limitations, including uneven ground, sand, water entry points, stairs, slopes, weather exposure, limited amenities or remote conditions.

Where practical and safe, we may be able to consider:

  • Modified activity participation
  • Alternative activities
  • Additional briefing or demonstration time
  • Clear verbal, visual or simplified instructions
  • Support for sensory needs
  • Adjusted group support or supervision
  • Equipment considerations
  • Suitable site or activity selection
  • Medical, dietary or wellbeing considerations
  • Communication with parents, caregivers, schools or support workers before the program

Some activities may not be suitable for every participant.

Where full participation is not possible, we will aim to provide a safe and meaningful alternative where practical.
